The port at sunset in Saint-Tropez is one of Paul Signac's most famous landscapes. In this painting, the purple mountain contrasts with the more orangey appearance of the sky and sea. The village, the central element of this composition, is enhanced. The painter emphasizes a play of delicate shades ranging from red to yellow, suggesting that a fire is burning fiercely behind these mountains.
A master of pointillism, the artist breaks down light into touches of vivid color, giving the canvas a luminous glow. When he moved to Saint-Tropez, Signac's painting became more luminous. The Mediterranean light influenced his color palette and renewed his style. Like this painting, the bouquet blends shades of blue and purple with chrysanthemums and statice.
